Porcellio dilatatus, also known as the ‘Giant Canyon’ Isopod, can be found in North America and Western Europe. These medium to large bodied isopods spend most of their time below or at the soils surface. Giant Canyon isopods will grow to be over 3/4” in length, and will reproduce quickly once established in your setup. Their shells have a rough texture and grayish brown coloration. Very similar to Porcellio scaber, but the Giant Canyon gets much larger, and will burrow more than some of the other Porcellio species.
- You will receive a mixture of adults and juveniles / manca.
This species is widespread in Europe, and is also in North America from Western Europe. They are 15 millimeters (0.59 in) long, have a brown colour and striped. They can be found feeding on alder leaves, but mostly feeds on organic food substrates, such as lettuce (Lactuca sativa) in the wild. It also feeds on inorganic metal salts.
Porcellio dilatatus ‘Giant Canyon’ Isopods make a great clean up crew in a bioactive setup or naturalistic vivarium. They are large, active, and a great clean up crew for dried vivaria, as long as humid refuges are provided. If you’re looking to keep these isopods outside of a vivarium, we’d recommend keeping them on our Isopod Substrate, or even better using our Isopod Culturing Kit. Josh’s Frogs MilliMix substrate is also a fantastic option.
In rare cases, starving isopods may attempt to consume the carapace of freshly molted invertebrates or even gnaw on small or delicate reptiles or amphibians. We strongly recommend providing supplemental food to your clean up crew in the enclosure, such as Josh’s Frogs CUC Cuisine. When in doubt, using dwarf species of isopods, such as Dwarf Tropical Whites, may be a safer option. Buy Porcellio dilatatus online.
